Description:

Costa Rica's telecommunications superintendency (Sutel) is the country's telecoms industry regulator. Among its main functions is to ensure the efficiency, equity, sustainability, quality, and more and better coverage and information in the telecom market, as well as better alternatives in the provision of services in the country. Sutel sets price caps, stimulates competition, licenses companies, assures the efficient use of the radio spectrum, and promotes cooperation among providers. The agency is also in charge of managing the National Telecommunications Fund (FONATEL), which brings telephony and Internet services to places where the market is not profitable. San José-based Sutel was founded in 2008.
