Mexico, Canada sign renewable energy accord
Mexico's energy ministry (Sener) and Canada's state-run Manitoba Hydro International have signed a memorandum of understanding to exchange renewable energy project best practices.
Mexico will benefit from Manitoba's experience in the development of mini hydroelectric projects, energy storage, high-voltage infrastructure and social impacts, Sener said in a press release.
Sener's deputy minister for planning and energy transition, Leonardo Beltrán Rodríguez, said the agreement brings an opportunity to learn from Canada's experience in renewable energy that will help Mexico meet its clean energy goals.
Mexico's energy transition law, approved by the lower house last December but awaiting senate approval, states that 25% of power must be generated from renewable sources by 2018; 30% by 2021; 35% by 2024; 45% by 2036; and 60% by 2050.
Manitoba Hydro International says it assists power utilities, governments, and private sector clients around the world in the efficient, effective, and sustainable delivery of electricity and natural gas.
