Paraguay to kick off analog TV switch-off in 2016

Bnamericas

Paraguay will begin its analog switch-off program in 2016 with the full switch off scheduled for 2024, Teresita Palacios, head of telecom regulator Conatel, said.

Paraguay adopted the Japanese-Brazilian digital TV standard ISDB-T in 2010 like most countries in Latin America. The original date for the switch-off was 2022 but was extended after requests by broadcasters.

The transition to digital TV has been far from smooth in Latin America.

In Mexico, where analog TV is meant to be switched off completely by December 31, the switchover has suffered several delays and problems. This week after it was revealed that nearly 500,000 people lost their TV signal in Monterrey for at least a week after the switch-off on September 24 due to a lack of digital decoders.

Brazil announced its digital TV switchover schedule last year, establishing a pilot program in 2015 and the rollout in 2016 in four state capitals. The switch-off timetable will be carried out progressively in the rest of the country through 2018.

Guatemala and El Salvador have yet to draw up a plan, while Nicaragua has kicked off the process.

Colombia and Panama are opting for Europe's DVB-T; the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico and El Salvador have chosen the US standard ATSC, and Cuba stands alone in the region with the Chinese standard DTMB.
