445 Mexican municipalities now suffering from drought
Mexico's national water authority Conagua has reported that 445 municipalities in the country were suffering the effects of drought at the end of May.
Municipalities in 29 of Mexico's 31 states have been affected by the drought, with the worst of it still being felt in Baja California state, where all five of the state's municipalities are feeling the effects of water shortages and four of them mired in extreme drought, according to Conagua.
Water supply issues have been affecting Baja California for the last 30 months and the situation is not expected to improve this year.
Elsewhere, 76.4% of municipalities in Sonora state are affected by drought, 72.7% of the municipalities in Campeche, 51.4% in Veracruz state, 48.3% in Chiapas, 47.8% in Chihuahua, 37.7% in Yucatán, 29.4% in Tabasco, 26.2% in Hidalgo and 16.1% in Puebla.
Last month 400 Mexican municipalities were reported to be suffering from drought, according to Conagua.
This month, Conagua issued an emergency agreement to help relieve the drought affecting the country. The water authority will coordinate temporary measures with local water basin councils to help resolve water shortages based on the results of the analyses of the situation carried out by the Mexico drought monitor in order to guarantee public supplies.
