Brazil took center stage once again this week, with the eternal debate between government regulation and free market economy physically manifesting itself in the battle between local telco Telefônica Telesp and French communications and entertainment group Vivendi for control of Brazilian telephony and internet provider GVT.
Less than 24 hours after GVT shareholders approved the removal of a poison pill clause from company bylaws, Telesp - the local unit of Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica - upped its offer for the firm to 50.50 reais per GVT share, thereby trumping its own previous highest offer of 48.00 reais per share. The latest offer pegs a value on GVT of some US$3.7bn.
The move is seen as a preemptive strike against Vivendi, which had originally submitted an unsolicited bid of 42.00 reais for GVT. The highest price may indeed prevail as Vivendi has said it would not enter a price war to acquire GVT, but market observers see the bid from Telesp as just another move to stifle competition, closing the market up and making it difficult for other international players to come into Brazil.
