Fermaca Networks to invest US$3.5bn in Mexico's Durango state

Bnamericas

Digital infrastructure company Fermaca Networks plans to invest US$3.5 billion in datacenters, telecoms networks and energy infrastructure in Mexico's Durango state.

The investment was announced during the presentation of the second state government report. Governor Esteban Villegas Villareal said the investment involves building one of the largest datacenters in Latin America, although he did not provide details.

“Durango is an excellent alternative because it has the availability of energy and connectivity, as well as a business climate that stimulates the attraction of investment to the state,” Fermaca director Octavio Berrón told BNamericas.

Between 70% and 75% of the investment will be earmarked for the two-stage datacenter.

In the first stage, an edge datacenter with capacity of 4-8MW will be installed. The second stage consists of building a hyperscale datacenter with capacity of 200-250MW, said Berrón.

The facility will be used for colocation services, disaster recovery, interconnection, and others.

Fermaca will also build a combined cycle plant to generate energy using natural gas and will extend fiber optics between the towns of Cuencamé, Guadalupe-Victoria, Panuco de Coronado and Durango city.

The project could generate 3,500 jobs.

Part of the Fermaca Dreams group, Fermaca Networks develops and invests in dark fiber optics, connectivity and datacenter projects. It is currently building the FN-1 long-range neutral fiber optics network.

The company recently announced that it has entered into agreements with affiliates of funds managed by Arroyo Investors and international banks to contribute to the capital structure of the first Fermaca Networks route.

The company is working with Zayo on a data corridor between Mexico and the US, which is expected to be completed in early 2026.

The 400Gbps FN-1 system will include points of presence in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Torreon, Aguascalientes, Guadalajara and Queretaro.

In addition to Zayo, the company has agreements with Mexico Telecom Partners and Gold Data to offer comprehensive connectivity solutions in Mexico as part of its fiber optics partner program.

As part of these same agreements, Gold Data will acquire a number of fiber pairs from the FN-1 route.
