Spending on mobile automation software could reach US$240mn in 2025

Spending on mobile radio access network (RAN) automation software and services in Latin America is expected to reach US$240 million by the end of 2025.

The RAN part is the most expensive, technically complex and power-intensive part of cellular infrastructure. Its automation is key to reducing operator costs.

The figure, which consultancy SNS Telecom & IT shared with BNamericas, includes SON-based (self-organizing networks) automation, open RAN automation, baseband-integrated intelligent RAN applications, RAN planning and optimization software and test/measurement solutions.

“The Latin American market is still dominated by proprietary SON-based RAN automation solutions, with a number of recent commercial engagements,” Asad Khan, 5G and wireless research director at SNS, told BNamericas.

Khan said that, for example, America Móvil’s Claro Colombia has contracted Nokia to supply its MantaRay C-SON (centralized SON) platform to support automated network operations.

“While SNS Telecom & IT does not anticipate a large-scale transition towards open RAN automation until the second half of the decade, we expect to see early live field trials in 2025,” he added.

Open RAN deployment in Latin America includes Peru’s Internet para Todos and Millicom’s rural network in Colombia.
