Description:
The Uruguay river's binational administration commission (CARU) is a Argentine-Uruguayan commission tasked with promoting the development and management of the Uruguay River. It comprises 10 delegates with representatives of both countries. It was created in 1975, through the "Statute of the Uruguay River", signed by both countries, in order to have an institution to allow a rational use of the river and its resources, in terms of navigation, fishing, seabed and subsoil. The commission is involved in a project to dredge the river from Nueva Palmira to Paysandú, a distance of over 206km. The canal will then have a 25-foot (7.6m) draft until Concepción, whereas between Concepción and Paysandú the draft will reach 21 feet.
