Description:
The Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC, COCEF in Spanish) is a binational agency created by the US and Mexican governments to preserve, protect and enhance human health and the environment of the US-Mexico border regions. BECC is headquartered in Ciudad Juarez in Mexico's Chihuahua state and was created in 1993 as part of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). BECC gets financing from the North American Development Bank (NADB), headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, which was established for this purpose at the same time. BECC works in conjunction with the NADB, federal, state and municipal entities, and with the private sector and civil society, to develop environmental infrastructure projects mainly in the areas of water and wastewater; solid waste; air quality; energy efficiency; and emerging sectors.
