Description:
The Paraguay-Paraná waterway inter-governmental committee (CIH) was set up by the governments of the Paraguay-Paraná river basin countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) to coordinate use of the Paraguay, Paraná and Uruguay rivers as an integrated system. The CIH regulates barge operators for all countries, sets navigation standards, and coordinates proposals for navigational improvements, including the waterway development project. The waterway forms the core of a river transport program along the Paraguay-Paraná water system, in the existing section between Puerto Cáceres in Brazil and Puerto Nueva Palmira in Uruguay. The work is designed to guarantee 24-hour navigation by convoys of barges and a push tug, which will carry large-volume shipments of the region's products at the lowest possible cost.
