On February 20, 1957, the Government of the Republic of Honduras created the National Electric Energy Company (ENEE) as an autonomous body responsible for the production, marketing, transmission and distribution of electric energy in Honduras.
When ENEE was established, construction began on the first large hydroelectric power plant, Cañaveral, as well as the construction of transmission lines and substations to transport electricity to consumption centers.
