Description:

Founded in 1949, Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) is a Costa Rican autonomous state-owned company that controls assets in electric energy generation, transmission and distribution. It also participates in the internet and telephony sector. ICE is part of the holding Grupo ICE which brings together energy and telecom companies. ICE exclusively administers Costa Rica's single interconnected energy system, the cleanest in Latin America, reaching a coverage of 94.3% of the country in 2015. ICE generates energy through five sources: water, geothermal, wind, solar and biomass (in order of volume) and uses hydrocarbons only as a backup system. In the telecom industry, ICE is responsible for building and operating transportation and access networks and developing Costa Rica's telecommunications. ICE is currently developing its 2014-2035 Electric Generation Expansion Plan as an instrument to ensure a proper energy supply in the years to come, and its 2016-2026 Electric Transmission Expansion Plan to guarantee the development of the national transmission network.
