El Salvador's Social Security Institute (ISSS) is the governmental organization responsible for providing workers with medical insurance for illness, maternity, and occupational hazards, and pensions for disability, retirement, unemployment, and death of a spouse. The Institute has 1.7 million members —820,706 workers and 161,061 pensioners, and the rest are third-party beneficiaries. The ISSS was created in 1949, is headquartered in San Salvador and operates under the Ministry of Social Work and Welfare.
