Description:
Brazil's Goiás state Environment and Sustainable Development Department (SEMAD), previously known as Environment, Water Resources, Infrastructure, Cities and Metropolitan Affairs Department (SECIMA), is tasked with drafting and executing the state's environmental policy, protecting the ecosystem, water and mineral resources, as well as animal and plant species. It is also responsible for devising and enforcing the state's policies on housing, basic sanitation, urban development and public transport. Similar responsibilities are exercised over public works, energy and telecommunication projects. The department supervises the state-run Transport and Works Agency of Goias (AGETOP), as well as the mixed-ownership companies Saneamiento de Goiás S.A. (Saneago), Agência Goiana de Habitação (Agehab), Companhia Celg de Particiçaões (Celgpar), Companhia de Investimentos e Parcerias do Estado de Goiás (Goiasparcerias), Agência Goiana de Gás Canalizado S.A (Goiasgás) and Transporte Coletivo S.A. (Metrobus). SEMAD is headquartered in Goiânia, the state capital.
