Description:
Chilean miner Sociedad Contractual Minera El Abra operates a porphyry copper open-pit mine and processing facility in El Loa province in Antofagasta region (II), northern Chile. The property hosts leachable oxide and sulfide mineralization. The company's assets include an SX/EW facility with a capacity of 500Mlb/y of copper cathode from a 125,000t/d crushed leach circuit and a similar-sized ROM leaching operation. El Abra's production is sold on local and international markets through long-term contracts. Incorporated in 1994, Minera El Abra is a 51:49 JV between US-based Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold and Chilean state copper company Codelco. In September 2015, El Abra curtailed mining and stacking activity by half to achieve lower operating costs, extending the life of the existing operations. It also deferred planned capital expenditure.
