Description:
Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. is a Japanese company engaged in the metal business, with three major segments: mineral resources, smelting and refining, and materials. The resource segment is engaged in the exploration, development, production and sale of non-ferrous metal resources. The smelting and refining segment smelts and sells copper, nickel, ferronickel, zinc, lead, gold, silver, platinum and others, and manufactures and sells copper products. Sumitomo Metal Mining has copper and gold operations in various countries. In Chile, the company owns stakes in copper mines Candelaria (16%) in Atacama region (III) and Sierra Gorda (31.5%) in Antofagasta region (II). In Peru, it has interests in copper mine Cerro Verde (16.8%). The company also has minority stakes in copper mines Morenci (12%) in the US and Northparks (13.3%) in Australia. In addition, Sumitomo Metal Mining owns and operates the gold mine Pogo (85%) in the US and the gold mine Hishikari (100%) in Japan.
