Bahamas’ finance ministry has submitted a US$9mn financing request to IDB for a 2.25MW solar plant and associated energy storage and transmission infrastructure.

Public utility Bahamas Power and Light is developing the project which is planned for the island of Great Abaco and will connect to the national grid.

The plant is part of reconstruction efforts following destruction caused by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, and the country’s policy for renewable energy to account for 30% of generation by 2030 from the current share of less than 1%.

The bulk of Bahamas’ energy needs are covered by fossil fuel imports.

The Dominican Republic’s national energy commission (CNE) has recommended that the executive branch grant local power generator EGE Haina a 30-year definitive concession for the 120MWp Girasol solar project.

In January, the company told BNamericas’ Project Profiles team that plant operations were expected to begin in around four months.
