Beyond concessions: The state of Chile’s hospital projects
Outside the concessions area, Chile’s health ministry (Minsal) has 13 hospital projects worth 2.5tn pesos (US$2.63bn) listed as under execution.
Of these, 10 are carried out by Minsal and its regional divisions, and three by the architecture division of the public works ministry (MOP), documents from a presentation to a congressional budget committee show.
The projects handled by Minsal as of September are:
Diego de Almagro hospital (18.9bn pesos; 77% complete)
Illapel hospital (121bn pesos. Being tendered. Contract scheduled to be awarded on November 29)
Marga Marga hospital (178bn pesos; 94% complete)
Melipilla hospital (160bn pesos; 97% complete)
Barros Luco hospital (360bn pesos; in design stage)
Sótero del Río hospital (492bn pesos; 23% complete)
Cordillera provincial hospital (217bn pesos; 16% complete)
Linares hospital (187bn pesos; 26% complete)
Ñuble provincial hospital (245bn pesos; 87% complete)
Las Higueras hospital stage III (183bn pesos; 55% complete)
Curacautín hospital (48.2bn pesos; 53% complete)
Queilén hospital (28.7bn pesos; 84% complete)
Ancud hospital (138bn pesos; 99% complete)
The projects handled by MOP are:
Licantén hospital (23.1bn pesos; in design stage)
Quellón hospital (73.8bn pesos; in initial operating phase)
Chile Chico hospital (31.4bn pesos; 98% complete)
When added to the 20 hospital concessions, all the country’s 16 regions have at least one active hospital project, deputy healthcare network secretary Osvaldo Sagado told legislators reviewing the 2025 budget bill.
The bill reduces the ministry’s investment budget to 573bn pesos from 582bn this year. The budget also funds smaller health centers, equipment and goods procurement, and vaccination campaigns and other programs. A bicameral committee is yet to review the proposed funding for Minsal.
