Brazilian mining association launches initiative to boost AI

Brazilian mining association Ibram launched an initiative to increase the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the sector, a measure that may also help attract talent.

Ibram, in partnership with Mining HUB, a working group formed by multiple mining stakeholders, launched a notice to attract AI initiatives and bring together experiences of AI use in the sector to encourage the exchange of know-how and consolidate Brazil's position at the forefront of technological innovation in the mining industry.

“We will select the main cases and produce an e-book. This way, projects have more visibility, and ideas and experiences can be shared with the entire sector,” Cinthia Rodrigues, Ibram research and development manager, said in a statement.

But the initiative goes further.

"One of the biggest challenges facing the mining industry in Brazil and around the world is to attract new talented professionals. The new generations still see the mining sector as a very traditional industrial sector with little use of technology and there's a lot of work to be done by mining companies to change this perception, showing that it has a lot of use for automation and new technologies," Patricia Muricy, leader of energy, resources & industrials at Deloitte in Brazil, told BNamericas.
