Cirion to expand Buenos Aires datacenter and looking for new site

Bnamericas

Latin America-focused technology company Cirion is expanding the capacity of its datacenter in Buenos Aires and is seeking a site to build a second center in the country.

The plan was confirmed by VP of datacenters Gabriel del Campo at the Cirion Forum held in the Argentine capital.

The expansion, which will take capacity of the current datacenter from 5MW to 6.5MW, is due to be completed in 2025.

As the datacenter is 90% occupied, the company is considering acquiring land to install a new one in Buenos Aires or its surroundings, Del Campo told reporters.

It is estimated that the new infrastructure would have capacity of at least 20MW, like its datacenters in Chile and Peru.

Asked whether the company could join the Rigi investment promotion mechanism, Del Campo told BNamericas that “it is being evaluated.”

EXPANSION IN CHILE?

Del Campo said an expansion of the 20MW datacenter being developed in Chile is being evaluated.

The executive told BNamericas that the total capacity of the project could be raised to 40MW, but that the first phase, of 4MW, remains unchanged.

“We are considering an expansion for the next phases,” he said. However, a decision will depend on technological changes and growth in demand.

NEW SUBMARINE CABLE

The company also announced a new cable between Argentina, Brazil and the United States, which will be called SAC-2 and will be inaugurated in the first quarter of 2025.

Initial capacity is 18Tbps, said Leonardo Barbero, president of connectivity at Cirion.

SAC-2 will leverage the growth of internet traffic and generate redundancy. No further details were provided.

Barbero also announced that investments were focused on increasing the capacity and interconnection of datacenters.

“What we did is deploy metro infrastructure to connect datacenters,” he added. “We have more than 160 interconnected datacenters.”

The company is investing approximately US$300mn in the region this year.
