Colombia's top 6 thermoelectric projects

BNamericas profiles the top six thermoelectric initiatives in the project registry of Colombia’s energy ministry planning unit UPME. The document sourced for this article can be seen here.

1. Nencol 5

Owner: Nodo Energético del Norte de Colombia

Proposed capacity: 1,140MW

Project phase: Pre-feasibility, technical analysis.

Earmarked for the Caribbean coastal city of Santa Marta, the complex will comprise three simple-cycle turbines that use natural gas as their main fuel source. It will also be configured to enable the use of diesel as a backup fuel. According to BNamericas' project database, the facility is due to begin operating in 2024 at a cost of US$560mn.

2. Tasajero III

Owner: Termotasajero

Proposed capacity: 180MW

Project phase: Feasibility studies.

Project manager Juan David Arango told Caracol Radio in April that the project remains on the drawing board, having been withdrawn from the energy ministry's project registry in 2018.

The coal-fired plant would complement an existing generator that has been operating at full capacity since November to meet rising demand. Arango also raised the possibility of building a renewable energy component at the site near Cúcuta, in Norte de Santander department.

3. Termo Gaira

Owner: Termo Gaira

Proposed capacity: 93.8MW

Project phase: Feasibility studies

The proposed gas-fired plant is part of the so-called northern energy hub in Santa Marta, Magdalena department. Owner Termo Gaira is a subsidiary of Houston-based developer Zeuzcorp.

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and DVSantos are bidding for an EPC contract while PIC Marubeni is in the running to operate the plant, according to BNamericas project researchers.

4. Termo Costa

Owner: Termo Costa

Proposed capacity: 93.8MW

Project phase: Feasibility studies

The project also forms part of the Santa Marta energy hub. The developer is currently conducting an interconnection study, with the start of construction slated for the first half of next year. The plant is expected online in 2024.

5. Termo Bonda

Owner: Termo Bonda

Proposed capacity: 90MW

Project phase: Feasibility studies

Termo Bonda is another gas-fired plant earmarked for integration with the Santa Marta hub, which will occupy an area of 1.5ha. All of the plants are being developed under the same conditions, project manager George Castellanos told BNamericas.

6. Central Térmica Palermo

Owner: Unkown

Proposed capacity: 60MW

Project phase: Pre-feasibility, technical studies

The proposed gas-fired plant has been slated for the Sitionuevo area of Magdalena department in northern Colombia.
