Data Insights: Brazil’s offshore gas pipeline projects

Brazil has at least 12 active offshore gas pipeline projects, according to BNamericas’ databank. 

Involving more than US$9.5bn in investments, they are in the early design and engineering stages or under environmental and social evaluation. 

The undertakings are planned to be deployed along the coast of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Espírito Santo and Sergipe states.

Pre-salt of the Santos basin-Cubatão pipeline (Rota 4a)

The project consists of the installation of a pipeline to transport the gas produced in the pre-salt layer of the Santos basin to a natural gas processing unit (UPGN) in Cubatão, São Paulo state.

The initiative includes a marine and a land section.

There are several routing alternatives that will need to be studied.

Pre-salt of the Santos basin-Port of Itaguaí pipeline (Rota 4b)

The gas pipeline will move natural gas from the pre-salt layer of the Santos basin to a UPGN at Itaguaí port, Rio de Janeiro state.

Rota 4C pipeline

The project contemplates the expansion of the natural gas outlet infrastructure from the pre-salt producing areas of the Santos basin through the laying of a pipeline that will connect to the Tepor port terminal in Macaé, Rio de Janeiro state.

Most of the pipeline would be installed off the coast.

The initiative includes an onshore section and an offshore section, which will comprise three branches.

OTHERS 

There are two additional offshore gas pipeline projects. 

One is national oil company PetrobrasRota 3 pipeline, which is ready to come online as soon as construction of the Gaslub UPGN in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro state, concludes.  

The other is the firm’s Sergipe deepwater project, which foresees the installation of two FPSOs (SEAP I and II) off the coast, to be connected to the shore via a 128km gas pipeline.
