Data Insights: Datacenters in Colombia

Colombia is the fourth largest datacenter hub in Latin America, with 16.7% of the total projects installed or being developed, according to the BNamericas database, which tracks eight projects in Colombia and a total of 102 across the region.

Among the companies that have developed or are developing datacenters in Colombia are IBM, GTD, KIO Networks, Ascenty, Odata, V.tal, Cirion, Equinix, HostDime and Sencinet.

The BNamericas database includes datacenters already in operation, such as V.tal's recently inaugurated second edge datacenter in Colombia, BDC2 (or Chiva 2).

With a total capacity of 3MW and space for up to 200 cabinets, BDC2 is located in Barranquilla and was opened in April 2024, almost a year later than the originally scheduled date in June 2023. The datacenter will function as a landing point for Trans Americas Fiber System's TAM-1 submarine cable.

Capital Bogotá hosts 66.7% of the Colombian datacenter projects in the BNamericas database, with the rest divided between Cundinamarca, Atlántico and other unreported areas.

The full complete database can be downloaded in the Documents box at the top right of the page.

ASCENTY

Although the launch of Ascenty's first datacenter in Colombia was planned for the end of 2024, it is now expected to open in Bogotá in 2025.

Ascenty is designing two twin datacenters for Colombia, each with a capacity of 12MW.

The company is not building a datacenter from scratch, but is retrofitting and modernizing buildings already constructed.

The second datacenter is still in the early stages of development.

KIO NETWORKS

In 2023, KIO announced the acquisition of a 5,000m² datacenter in Colombia, two data rooms with more than 2,000m² of white space and capacity of 6MW, which started operations in November.

The site has additional land to build a second datacenter with similar characteristics, providing capacity of up to 12MW more for the campus. However, specific plans for this expansion are unknown.

ODATA

Odata's (Aligned Data Centers) second datacenter in Colombia, BG02, is in the early stages.

The project, which will be located in the metropolitan free zone of Bogotá, is expected to begin work at the end of 2024.

Odata already has a datacenter located on the same property called BG01. Inaugurated in 2019, it has 14.6MW capacity.

OTHER PROJECTS

Scala Data Centers plans to invest US$2 billion in datacenter launches and expansions in Latin America between 2024 and 2025, including a new site in Bogotá, which should go into operation between 2024 and 2027, according to its website. Details of the project were not disclosed by the company.

Chilean firm GTD also plans to open a datacenter in Barranquilla.

Cirion, meanwhile, plans to expand its datacenters in Bogotá as part of a US$327mn investment plan for datacenters, cables and its general connectivity ecosystem in Latin America.
