Peru's WIN Empresas invests in expansions and new datacenter

Peruvian company WIN Empresas plans to triple the revenues of its datacenter business and is preparing to open a new facility on the outskirts of Lima.

“We estimate that the datacenter capacity will multiply by 2.5 in terms of space in the next three or four years,” Augusto Cuadros, director of the datacenter unit at the firm, told BNamericas.

Its main datacenter in Lima, Santa Catalina, was inaugurated in 2020 and already has occupancy of 80%, so last year it was decided to start the expansion, taking it to its maximum capacity of 2MW.

At the same time, WIN is working on building a datacenter from scratch in La Molina, the company's sixth in the country.

The datacenter will have space for a little more than 600 cabinets in total, with a first phase opening with 200 cabinets. The initial investment is US$12mn. The company will allocate another US$10mn for phases 2 and 3.

“We're the only company that has a datacenter outside of Lima, fully certified, and another under construction,” said Cuadros. Its datacenter in Tacna, on the border with Chile, allows access to connectivity services in Chilean territory, generating greater redundancy and disaster recovery services.

“Being on the border with Chile allows us not only to have an international exit via the west coast cable but we can also cross the continent and exit through the Atlantic,” Cuadros said.

He also suggested that Peru has a weakness in terms of international connectivity, since exit of data is mainly through Lima. “There's a supplier that has an international exit in the north, but with very little capacity so it can't absorb a large amount of capacity.”
