Snapshot: Ascenty’s pipeline of datacenter projects
Brazil’s Ascenty, the largest colocation datacenter company in Latin America, has various projects under development in the region, with 23 sites already in operation and 11 in progress.
The company, owned by Digital Realty and Brookfield, last month announced US$1bn in funding with two five-year financial instruments to invest in the construction and expansion of datacenters in the region.
The funding for the loan facility and debenture line was raised mostly from Brazilian institutions, but Ascenty is looking to carry out similar operations in Mexico, Chile and Colombia.
Overall, the Brazilian datacenter market is expected to see investments of US$4.43bn by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 8.3% in 2022-28, according to estimates by research firm Aritzon, and Ascenty will be a major contributor.
In addition to cloud growth, the region is also seeing rising investments due to Brazil’s data protection legislation, the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados Pessoais (LGPD), which has brought in various regulations on the storage of data generated in the country.
Most of Ascenty’s sites are located in the São Paulo metropolitan area, which is Latin America’s biggest datacenter hub.
In the area it hosts the public cloud services of Google (one of Google’s three availability zones in Brazil, at Ascenty’s SP03 datacenter), IBM Cloud (both of IBM’s two datacenters, at Ascenty’s Jundiaí 1 and Vinhedo 2 sites), Microsoft Azure (one of two, at Ascenty's Campinas datacenter), and Oracle Cloud (one of two, at the Vinhedo 2 datacenter).
In addition to São Paulo state, Ascenty has datacenters in Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza, while outside Brazil it also has active sites in Chile and Mexico.
