Snapshot: Brazil's offshore oil and gas rigs

Brazil has 39 offshore rigs hired, including well drilling and intervention equipment, according to data from oil and gas watchdog ANP. 

The number compares to between 20 and 30 rigs on average in recent years. 

In July, for example, there were 28 rigs under hire. 

Petrobras, Brava Energia, PRIO, Shell, BP, Trident Energy, TotalEnergies, Equinor and Karoon have rigs working on their behalf off the Brazilian coast. 

The rig operators are Foresea, Constellation, Diamond Offshore, Ensco, Etesco, Ventura, Transocean, Helix, Noble, Seadrill and Valaris. 

The growth in the fleet is a reflection of federal oil company Petrobras' increased exploration and production activities, along with the development of private sector projects. 

The state-run firm plans to invest US$77bn in E&P by 2029, while independent oil companies are expected to invest over US$7bn in the five-year period. 

In addition, E&P undertakings are planned by international oil companies such as BP, Shell, Equinor and TotalEnergies.

On Tuesday, Brava Energia hired Constellation's Lone Star rig to drill and complete four wells – two in the Atlanta field and two in Papa-Terra – and possibly work on a fifth in Malombe.
