The number of internet accesses in the Dominican Republic increased 1.6% quarter-on-quarter in 4Q23, reaching a total of 10.3mn, according to latest data by regulator Indotel.

Fiber optics connections accounted for 49.8% of the total, xDSL for 19.36% and cable modem for 16.14%. The rest related to wireless, WiMax, satellite and other technologies.

Some 26.3% of fixed internet accesses were at speeds of 30-100Mbps and 23.5% at 4-10Mbps. Residential services accounted for 88.9% of subscriptions.

Claro operated 6.23mn accesses, Altice 3.46mn and Viva 445,122.

Revenues totaled 9.29bn pesos (US$155mn).

Mobile internet accesses totaled 9mn, with 4G accounting for 66% and 2G and 3G for just over 7% each. Indotel did not provide figures on 5G lines, but other technologies accounted for 19.6% of mobile internet access.

TELEPHONY

About 11.5mn fixed and mobile telephony lines were in operation, up 0.18%.

Of this total, mobile telephony represented 10.4mn (up 0.28%) and fixed telephony 1.1mn lines (up 0.68%).

Residential IP fixed telephony accounted for 39.2% of connections, traditional residential fixed telephony 31.3%, and corporate networks for the balance (22.1% traditional landline and 7.4% IP telephony).

Claro was the leader in fixed telephony with 847,480 lines, followed by Altice with 263,059 and Viva with 17,351.

Most mobile telephony lines corresponded to prepaid. Claro operated 5mn prepaid and 1.5mn postpaid lines, Altice 2.5mn prepaid and some 963,440 postpaid and Viva 381,664 prepaid and 48,317 postpaid lines.

Revenue for fixed telephony reached 1.52bn pesos and for mobile telephony 2.86bn pesos.

PAY TV

Nearly 714,790 pay-TV subscriptions were registered in 4Q23, 95.2% corresponding to residential services. The number of subscriptions fell 2.23% quarter-on-quarter.

Of the total, 37.2% were IPTV subscriptions, 34.9% cable and 27.8% satellite.

Claro had 433,605 contracts, Altice 110,037 and Viva 1,028.

Revenues totaled 4.3bn pesos.

PACKAGED SERVICES

Around 1.3mn packaged service subscriptions were registered, 72.9% corresponding to fixed broadband, fixed telephone and television services. Broadband and landline subscriptions represented 22.8% and broadband and television subscriptions 4.31%.

Revenue reached 3.61bn pesos.
