Spotlight: The first hospitals to benefit from US$2bn Peru-UK agreement

Nine hospitals are included in the first tender package under a 7bn-sol (US$2bn) agreement signed by the Peruvian and UK governments, although the specific budgets for the projects are not expected to be unveiled until early October. 

The works entail either rehabilitating or completely rebuilding hospitals and health centers that were damaged by the 2017 El Niño floods. 

It is estimated that 1.4bn soles will be invested in a total of 15 health infrastructure works under the agreement, according to reconstruction authority RCC. The whole program also includes schools and waterworks.

The first projects were divided into five sub-packages:

Package 1 (Piura region)

Chulucanas hospital (pictured)

It entails rebuilding a 25,000m2 hospital with capacity for 92 beds and two operating theaters.

Package 2 (Áncash)

Yungay hospital 

It involves demolishing a 1,931m2 structure and building a new one from scratch on a 7,459m2 site. The new hospital will have 27 beds.

Pomabamba hospital 

This entails replacing the existing 1,818m2 hospital with a new one with capacity for 39 beds, on a 10,455m2 site.

Package 3 (Piura)

Limón de Porcuya health center

Involves rehabilitating a 2,799m2 structure. 

San Miguel del Faique health center 

Entails reconstruction of a 3,280m2 health center.

Castilla health center

Involves the total reconstruction of a 12,000m2 hospital in Castilla district.

Package 4 (Áncash)

Yungar health center

Entails demolishing the current 311.54m2 building and constructing a new health center within a 1,850m2 area.

San Nicolás health center

The contract consists of demolishing a 1,094m2 structure and building a new one on a 2,457m2 plot.

Package 5 (Lambayeque)

Posope Alto health center

Entails rebuilding the health center on a 2,970m2 site.
