Which telcos are reaching for the AWS cloud?

Companies in Latin America are working on reducing their own datacenter footprint and migrate to external cloud solutions, Marcos Grilanda, regional director of sales for Amazon Web Services (AWS) told BNamericas.

In Latin America, the company is seeing significant growth, especially in the e-commerce, banking and telecommunications segments. "Also in areas where we didn’t expect such a rapid transformation, such as health, retail, oil or energy," Grilanda said.

"Telecommunications is undergoing a very deep transformation process," he said.

Cloud services are chosen by operators both for their internal business transformation processes and to offer their end customers associated solutions, packaged with the connectivity service in a single invoice.

BNamericas takes a look at some of the latest announcements by operators and AWS.

Telefónica

In Brazil, Telefónica’s Vivo announced the validation of AWS Outpost as an infrastructure option to deploy 5G Core and offer 5G standalone services in its operations.

AWS Outpost is a managed service that offers the same AWS infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools as in virtually any on-premises installation.

Vivo has taken a multi-vendor approach to its 5G network with technology from Mavenir, Nokia and Oracle.

Telecom Argentina

Telecom Argentina has chosen AWS to help with moving to the cloud, according to Grilanda.

As part of the strategy, the company remotely trained more than 700 employees in new technologies. It has implemented a serverless structure, based on containers and microservices to accelerate developments and reduce the time-to-market of its products and services. The company currently has seven applications hosted in the AWS cloud.

Millicom

Millicom, which operates under the Tigo brand, has been an AWS customer since 2012. The company uses more than 30 products, including applications host, content delivery, analytics, management and governance, machine learning, and customer experience.

Additionally, it has recently partnered with AWS to expand and integrate its managed and professional services in its portfolio of cloud solutions in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia. The collaboration enables Tigo Business to offer Amazon cloud services as part of its Tigo Multi-Cloud Managed Services portfolio.

Claro

In Colombia, Claro chose AWS as a partner to offer cloud services to corporate clients. In addition, both companies are creating a Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE) in Bogotá. The alliance will allow the joint development of products using AWS services.

Claro Brasil, Embratel and AWS, meanwhile, announced an alliance to generate business opportunities in Brazil and accelerate the adoption of cloud-based applications.

The first initiative is the adoption of AWS cloud computing technology to implement a CCoE to support the adoption of cloud solutions in various initiatives, segments and portfolios of companies.

Oi

A solutions provider for the corporate market, Brazil's Oi Soluciones announced this year the launch of the Oi Cloud Hub, which enables the integrated management of multiple clouds on a single platform.

It functions as an integrator of major public clouds, including AWS, Huawei Cloud, IBM Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Oi provides a dashboard for the provisioning of workloads with a centralized overview of resources, as well as billing in local currency.
