Brasília, 06/30/23 – 5G reached 10.1 million accesses in Brazil in May 2023, 11 months after the start of its commercial operation, which began on July 6, 2022, with the arrival of the new technology to Brasilia. The data are part of a survey by Conexis Brasil Digital, based on information from the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).

“We reached the mark of 10 million 5G users in 11 months of operation of the new technology. 4G took 26 months to reach that mark. This shows that people are more eager and likely to adopt the new technology than they were when we implemented 4G”, said the CEO of Conexis, Marcos Ferrari.

The advancement of 5G can already be seen with faster navigation and the development of new applications. These applications will be enabled by the changes provided by 5G, with ultra-fast speed, much faster response time and the ability to keep an even greater number of devices connected at the same time.

Today, 5G is already present in around 150 municipalities, serving far beyond the obligations provided for in the first phase of the auction notice. The notice provided for the obligation to install 5G in all capitals by September 2022 with about one antenna for every 100,000 inhabitants. The next obligation of the auction determines the installation of the new technology in all cities with more than 500 thousand inhabitants by July 2025. Currently, all these cities already have 5G installed by at least one of the operators.

“The data shows that companies have been working to advance connectivity, but we continue to warn of the need for cities to update their municipal antenna laws, adapting them to the General Antenna Law, to allow for faster and simplified licensing”, he highlighted. Ferrari.

A survey by Conecta 5G points out that among the 155 cities with more than 200 thousand inhabitants – including the capitals – half of them, 78, have unfavorable laws or do not have specific legislation for the installation of antennas; 53 of these cities have favorable antenna laws for 5G expansion; and 24 have specific legislation, but that still requires adjustments to have more adherence to the General Antenna Law.

Conecte 5G

To help inform the population and disseminate true information about connectivity and about 5G, the providers associated with Conexis created the Connect 5G project.

Clear rules and agile licensing are essential for the advancement of 5G, which will require five to ten times more antennas than 4G.

The sector, however, has reinforced that 5G antennas are smaller than 4G antennas and therefore the visual impact on the city is smaller. These antennas can be installed on the facades of buildings and on urban furniture such as advertising panels, traffic lights and poles.
