Aguas Chañar posts Q1 profit of US$776k

Chile's Region III water utility Aguas Chañar, which took over operations from state-owned Emssat in March 2004, posted a 451mn-peso (US$775,981) net profit in the first quarter, versus a 75.3mn-peso net loss in 1Q04. Revenue jumped 3,465% to 2.44bn pesos and operating profit closed at 711mn pesos, versus a 62.7mn-peso operating loss in the first quarter of last year, Aguas reported to the country's securities regulator (SVS). The results reflect the fact that Aguas operated for only a portion of March 2004. Chañar posted a 948mn-peso net profit for 2004. Icafal, Hidrosan and Vecta make up Chañar, which picked up its 30-year operating contract in December 2003 after submitting the highest offer at US$25mn. The utility serves a little more than 240,000 residents, with drinking water and sewerage coverage at 99.5% and 93.6% respectively. It treats 84.5% of wastewater.
