Alumbrera opens mini expansion

Argentina's Alumbrera copper-gold mine officially opened its new grinding circuit and pebble crusher. The mini expansion increases annual throughput capacity by 25% to 37Mt and was completed some months ago for US$29mn compared to a budgeted US$36mn. The mine, in Catamarca province, is operated by Switzerland's Xstrata following its recent acquisition of Australia's MIM Holdings. It produces around 180,000t/y copper and 700,000oz/y gold. Alumbrera has begun a US$700,000 drilling program aimed at extending the mine's life, currently around eight years, by one or two more, El Cronista newspaper reported.
