Arawak Cement considering burning tires to fuel new plant

Bnamericas
Barbados-based Arawak Cement is considering burning used tires for fuel at its new plant in St Lucy parish, paper Trinidad Express reported. The company is owned by Trinidad Cement (TCL), Trinidad & Tobago's only cement producer. TCL Group CEO Rollin Bertrand said the group is seeking government assistance for several programs and initiatives it plans to launch, which include the proposal to burn used tires as an alternative fuel to reduce energy costs and contaminating emissions. "Tire burning is done in the US under a clean air act and is all Environmental Protection Agency certified, so we would be bringing environmentally friendly technology into Barbados," Bertrand said at the plant's inauguration.
