Belgo-Mineira to double steel production at 2 plants

Brazilian long-steel maker Belgo-Mineira has approved plans to double production at two of its plants in central Minas Gerais state, according to a report by news service Agência Estado. Belgo-Mineira, which is controlled by global no. 2 steelmaker Arcelor, will boost production at its Juiz de Fora plant to 2Mt/y by 2010, according to Belgo director Cláudio Horta Mendes. The expansion program will cost 1bn reais (US$373mn). The company also plans to increase production at its the João Monlevade plant to 2.4Mt/y from the current 1.2Mt/y. Belgo-Mineira is Brazil's second-largest long-steel maker, producing 4Mt annually. The company also owns Argentine long-steel maker Acindar, which produces 1Mt/y and is Argentina's leading producer of long steel. Belgo-Mineira will dedicate the expansion of its plant in Piracicaba, where annual production was increased to 1.1Mt, on April 1. The expansion project was completed in 4Q04. Arcelor President Guy Dollé is expected to attend the ceremony.
