CVRD signs new iron ore contract with Shougang

Bnamericas
Brazilian mining-metals giant CVRD (NYSE: RIO) has signed a contract to supply 11.3Mt of iron ore to Chinese steelmaking group Shougang from 2004-2012, the company said in a statement. CVRD already had an iron ore contract with Shougang to provide 4.4Mt from 2004-2008, bringing the total iron ore supply to the Chinese company to 15.7Mt in the period 2004-2012. This contract follows the deal CVRD reached in July with Japan's Nippon Steel to supply 70Mt of iron ore between 2005 and March 2015. Signing long-term supply contracts is part of the Brazilian company's strategy of locking in important clients and securing future income generation. Rio de Janeiro-based CVRD is Latin America's largest diversified mining and logistics company.
