Central Bank warns against email fraud

Brazil's Central Bank on Monday warned current account holders at Brazilian banks against an email fraud scheme, which gets people to register personal details under false pretenses. The email asks customers of four banks, Banco do Brasil, Itau, Caixa Economica and ABN Amro Real to register their details through web sites. "The Central Bank never sends e-mails specifically to current account holders and users of the national financial system, except in response to specific consultations requested by customers of financial institutions," the bank said in a statement. "The Central Bank warns that these e-mails should not be responded to by the recipients under any circumstances," the bank said. The bank said it was taking measures to trace the origins of the e-mails, and has called in the federal police.
