Commission to submit energy savings plan in 2 weeks

The Dominican Republic's government has created a commission to develop a national energy savings plan within the next two weeks, the presidential news service reported. The move comes in light of high international oil prices, which are severely damaging the Dominican Republic's economy because the country relies exclusively on fuel imports. The plan will aim to save the country about US$600mn, the statement said, without tying that figure to any time period. The commission is made up of national energy commission president Rubén Montás, the Refidomsa refinery president Arístides Fernández and executive power energy advisor Eduardo Rodríguez. The commission will be coordinated by commerce and industry secretary Francisco Javier García. The plan will also address alternative energy sources, the statement said.
