Costa Rica's national highway council Conavi plans to invest 41.4bn colones (US$99mn) on highway infrastructure in 2004, La Prensa Libre reported. "This is a great effort that Conavi is doing, and in which not only is maintenance taken into account, but also the construction of new and important works," the paper quoted public works and transport minister Javier Chaves as saying. Some 6.1bn colones will go towards highway conservation, including works in Alajuela, Heredia, the Cartago-Turrialba highway, roads in Pacifico Central, Liberia and the Nicoya Peninsula, among others. Another 3.1bn colones will go to building new highways, including Costanera Sur, Jaco-Loma, Los Chiles-Tablitas, Desamparados and a bridge over the Tiribi River; while 3.67bn colones will go to improvement works in Bananito, Sixaloa, San Carlos, Palmar Sur-Sierpe and Monteverde. Bridge construction and rehabilitation works - some 7.58bn colones - will benefit the Moin access, bridge over the Penas Blancas and Balsa rivers, and bridges over the La Chanchera, Bolivia and Las Gemelas streams.
