DF mayor welcomes second train for metro

Bnamericas
Mexico's federal district (DF) mayor Andrés López has put into service the second of 45 new trains and the third rehabilitated train in the Mexico City metro system, the DF government said in a statement. More trains will come online on a monthly basis, with the last slated to begin operations in mid-2006. Bombardier is leading train construction, having won the 6bn-peso (US$535mn) project. The DF has paid 1.5bn pesos so far, López said, and will pay another 2bn pesos in 2005 with funding from the federal government. The DF government has said it has no immediate plans to raise rates for public transport systems including the metro, trolleybus, light rail trains and buses. The metro system alone transports roughly 4.5 million passengers daily along 11 lines.
