Dispute reportedly shuts Tintaya oxide plant
Bnamericas Published: Thursday, November 27, 2003
Anglo-Australian resources group BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP) has suspended operations at the oxide plant at its Tintaya copper mine in southern Peru because a local dispute has cut off acid supplies, Reuters news agency reported. The report said the Tintaya mine itself, where sulfide operations are being restarted after being put on hold last year because of weak copper prices, was unaffected. According to the reports, the decision to suspend oxide operations is costing the company more than US$200,000 a day. Tintaya is designed to produce around 34,000t/yt of copper cathodes at the oxide plant and 90,000t/y in concentrates. The dispute centers over rights to water from a dam, and has led to protests that blocked roads and prevented the company from receiving supplies or shipping its cathodes from Matarani port.
