GSM users reach five million

Bnamericas
Brazil will be home to five million GSM technology subscribers next month, 16 months after the first GSM operator Oi unveiled operations, in June 2002, Brazilian mobile telephony operator executives told reporters at Brazil's annual Futurecom congress in Florianopolis. Five million users is 12.5% of Brazil's total expected base of 40.8 million mobile subscribers in November. This figure is expected to rise to 50% "in a few years," Oi chief executive Eduardo Falco said. By year-end the association expects another two million GSM handsets to be purchased in Brazil, he added. Three of Brazil's four major mobile players use GSM technology: Oi, owned by Brazilian telco Telemar, America Movil (NYSE: AMX)'s Claro and Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM). The fourth player Vivo, a joint venture between Spain's Telefonica Moviles (NYSE: TEM) and Portugal Telecom (NYSE: PT) operates on a CDMA network. In other news, Falco said Oi expects to have installed 4,000 radio base stations by year-end, up from 2,700 today.
