Govt. reduces hydrocarbon theft by 49% in 2004

Bnamericas
Efforts by Colombia's government have helped to reduce hydrocarbon theft by 49% from 2003 to an average of 2,971 barrels a day (b/d) in January-November 2004, government news service SNE reported. The money not lost through having reduced the thefts is some US$52mn, mines and energy minister Luis Ernesto Mejía said. "Congress has made two very important decisions: the first is to eliminate the possibility of not spending jail time for fuel theft and the other is the law that allows goods acquired through illegal means to be confiscated, which will be rigorously applied to fuel theft," Mejía added.
