El Salvador's government plans to spend US$53.5mn in upgrading four important highways stretching a total of some 200km, La Prensa reported. The stretches include Santa Ana-Metapan-Anguiatu, Santa Ana-Quezaltepeque detour, San Miguel-Sirama and San Marcos-Zacatecoluca. Only the Santa Ana-Anguiatu route has previously undergone any proper resurfacing while the rest have been patched up, said Carlos Moran, technical director of El Salvador's highway commission Fovial. The 60km Santa Ana-Anguiatu highway, the main trade route to Guatemala, will be upgraded by Italian company Astaldi involving an investment of US$18.3mn and using hydraulic cement due to the amount of traffic it receives. Cement is transported along this route as well as merchandise from the ports of Puerto and Barrios Santo Tomas de Castilla ports in Guatemala, Moran said. Works began on April 21 and are 24% complete, according to Fovial.
