Juniper LatAm billing in line with world ops in 2003

US router supplier Juniper Networks (Nasdaq: JNPR) saw billing grow approximately 28% last year in Latin America, in line with its total sales growth, company executives told BNamericas at Sao Paulo's Telexpo congress. The company does not disclose regional revenues or give guidance, and claims to have a 30% share of the regional market, which is dominated by its main rival, Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO). Latin America is expected to grow again in tandem with global sales this year, Juniper Americas vice president Bill Bridgwater said, adding that the economic recovery which surfaced in the third quarter will continue through 2004. Operators are in the midst of a continued spending crunch, but investments for internet protocol (IP) infrastructure are on the rise, Bridgwater added. This year holds "exponential project growth, if not exponential revenue growth" in Brazil, the company's number one Latin American market, Bridgwater said, adding that he expects the telecoms regulator Anatel to begin local loop unbundling by year-end. However, depending on Anatel's specific guidelines for how unbundling will occur, it will be a make-or-break opportunity for Juniper. If Anatel decides to unbundle "more than just the IP level," new entrants will have to rent equipment from the incumbents, which would not create new sales for Juniper, he added. Juniper's Brazil clients include wireline operators Telesp (NYSE: TSP), Brasil Telecom (NYSE: BRP) , Embratel (NYSE: EMT) and GVT. The bulk of Juniper revenue comes from operators, with a small slice from ISPs and corporations.
