Ministry to launch railroad concessions

Uruguay's transport and public works ministry (MTOP) will launch bidding in the coming weeks to operate 1,588km of railroads, minister Lucio Caceres announced. The government is authorized to transfer US$5mn/y to concessionaires to compensate them for US$56mn in investment over the 20 years of the concession as part of the government's "Vias para la Integracion" project, said Caceres. He added that the most economically viable lines have been identified. The country's rail network spans 3,000km. Investment will go towards reconstruction and maintenance to increase cargo capacity, and increase the average speed to 50-60km/hr from 20km/hr.
