New Region III airport to begin test ops. next week

Test operations will begin next week at a new airport to serve Chile's Region III capital Copiapó, business daily Diario Financiero quoted construction company Belfi president Enrique Elgueta as saying. Belfi owns Aeropuerto Regional de Atacama, which won a 20-year concession last year for the 3,000 sq. m. airport that will initially handle some 175,000 passengers/y. The US$25mn airport will include a 2.2km runway, facilities for four Airbus A-320s, a wastewater treatment plant, access roads and parking. The airport's civil works wrapped up about 10 days ago, said Elgueta, adding that official operations could begin in February.
