North-South II transmission line construction suspended

Bnamericas
Brazil's labor ministry has suspended the construction of the 1,200km North-South II transmission line due to public prosecutors' accusations of lack of safety following the death of five workers, newspaper Valor Economico reported. The five died in November because they were not using proper safety equipment in the construction of the towers and the installation of cables stretching from Colinas (Tocantins state) to Imperatriz (Maranhao), the newspaper reported. Italy's Enelpower is building the line, and the Colinas-Imperatriz stretch is scheduled to start operations in February 2004. Enelpower is negotiating with the ministry to provide better safety equipment and change procedures. Public prosecutors want to monitor the construction.
