Region VIII advances on waste mgt. front

Chile's Region VIII environment authority Corema has approved the EIS for a US$2mn sanitary landfill project in the town of Coronel, El Sur and La Segunda reported. Company Servicios de Vertedero Los Maitenes is behind the 15ha project - "Relleno Sanitario Santa Alicia" - that will have the capacity to take in 12,000t/y and has a useful life of 12 years. Meanwhile, fellow company Servimar submitted an EIS for a waste management center 4km southeast of Penco that will cost some US$2.1mn and have a useful life of 16 years, Diario Financiero reported. The 8,333t/month project, dubbed Cemarc, would take up 21.9ha and serve municipalities in Concepcion province. EIS observations can be presented within 60 days, after which authorities will review comments and issue a statement in another 60 days.
