Bnamericas
Costa Ricans sent a record 209 million text messages during the month of December 2004, according to local paper Al Día. At midnight on December 31, 500,000 text messages were sent, representing half the country's text-messaging customers. On normal days it takes four to five seconds for a message to arrive but over the holidays it took as long as an hour. Costa Rica's mobile exchanges can carry 492,000 messages an hour, according to the head of electricity and telecoms monopoly ICE's mobile platforms, Wilfredo Delgado.
