Telar wins Montevideo waterworks plan final P3 contract

Bnamericas
Uruguay's capital Montevideo has awarded Brazil's Telar Engenharia a contract worth some US$9mn to rehabilitate sewerage network in the downtown area, an official from the city's waterworks executing unit told BNamericas. The official said the contract - expected to be formalized in the coming days - is the last one that corresponds to the US$219mn current and third phase of Montevideo's waterworks plan slated to run through 2005. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a US$153mn loan in 1996 for this phase, which includes expanding sewerage and storm drainage systems, building/expanding sewer mains, interceptors, pumping stations, outfalls and pretreatment plants, and developing programs to control industrial pollution and water quality. Negotiations continue with the IDB over a fourth phase that would require US$100mn, details of which will be ironed out during the remaining years of the plan's third phase.
